Joining
What ages do you accept?
We welcome scouts from about age 6 through high school, grouped by age into ngành so each scout works alongside peers. Younger siblings are welcome to visit with a parent while they wait to age in.
Does my child need to speak Vietnamese?
No. Many of our scouts start with little or no Vietnamese and pick it up naturally through songs, ceremonies, and their friends. Leaders run meetings in both Vietnamese and English.
Do we need scouting or music experience?
None at all. Most scouts arrive having never held an instrument or tied a knot. We teach from the beginning, and older scouts mentor the newer ones.
How do we register?
Fill out the registration form on this site and a leader will follow up with meeting times, what to bring, and where to park. You are welcome to visit a meeting before deciding.
Meetings
When and where do you meet?
We meet regularly in Houston during the school year, with extra rehearsals before performances and holidays such as Tết and Trung Thu. Meeting times are confirmed when you register, and every date is listed on our events page.
Do parents stay during meetings?
Parents are always welcome to stay, and we hope you do. Many families end up helping with rehearsals, food, transportation, and performance days.
What should my scout wear?
For a first visit, comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes are plenty. Once your scout joins, we will walk you through the Hướng Đạo uniform and where to get the pieces.
Programs
What does the fine arts focus actually mean?
Alongside traditional scouting, our scouts study violin and strings, voice and choir, visual arts, lion dance, and traditional Vietnamese instruments. Scouts try several before settling into what they love.
Do we have to buy an instrument?
Not to start. We have loaner instruments for beginners so a family can be sure of the interest before buying anything. Leaders can advise on renting or buying when the time comes.
Where does the troop perform?
Our scouts perform at Tết festivals, Trung Thu celebrations, parish and community events, and our own showcases. Upcoming dates are posted on the events page.
Cost and support
How much does it cost?
Dues are $150 a year per scout. We keep them low and cover the rest through fundraising and community support. Cost is never the reason a child cannot join, so please ask a leader if dues would be a hardship for your family. That conversation stays private.
How can parents help?
There is room for everyone: chaperoning, sewing and costumes, food, photography, driving, fundraising, and simply being a steady adult presence. Check the volunteer box on the registration form and we will find a fit.
